How to make the proper pipe repair for your project?

Generally speaking, steel pipe repair involves the most common types of damages or deterioration to piping system, such as internal and external corrosion, as well as situations where the damages are extensive. It is always significant to make the proper pipe repair for your project.

As an important building material, galvanized pipe is widely used in the construction field. As this type of steel pipe has the good performance of the corrosion resistance and also longer service life, users have to pay attention to the rust removal & reinforcement work as well as the proper installation. Besides, it is strongly suggested that users should try to keep the surrounding of the pipes clean, and try to avoid putting pipes and sharp objects together, avoid the unnecessary damages to the pipe body and the surface material wear. Welding defects are typical discontinuity that compromises the usefulness of welded pipes, which could render it unable meet minimum applicable acceptance standards/specifications. The weld deposit should be inspected visually immediately after welding. For smooth weld deposits, wire brushing may be sufficient. For some common carbon steel pipes, however, brushing disturbs the existing passive film and may aggravate corrosive attack. When a variation in composition across the weld metal can cause localized attack, it may be desirable to use protective coatings. The coating needs covering both the welding and the parent metal and often requires special surface preparation.

With regard to hot dipped galvanized steel pipe, galvanizing has been used to protect iron and steel from rusting for over a hundred years in the iron and steel industry. Galvanizing is simply coating of zinc over steel products. Like paint, galvanized coating protects steel products from corrosion by forming a barrier between the steel base and the environment, but galvanizing goes one giant step further than paint. Besides, it can provide electrochemical protection of the steel products. Since zinc is electrochemically more reactive than steel, it oxidizes to protect the steel near it. As a result, even if a galvanized steel surface is scratched down to the bare steel, the galvanizing coating will prevent the steel from rusting. Galvanized steel pipe, somewhat is considered a superior product in a couple of practical applications, for it extends the service life and has a relatively low cost in use.

On the other hand, even though the remaining zinc continues to provide some protection to the zinc-free areas, the appearance is poor, and the zinc-free areas will rust when exposed to the environment. In some cases, paints are properly applied to effectively restoring full corrosion protection to the weld areas. Generally these paints are available in either spray cans or in containers suitable for brush or spray application. In recent years, more and more steel pipe manufacturers begin to pay much attention to the improving the welding technology involving weld toughness, porosity control, weld appearance, restoring corrosion resistance and other issues in a mill.
