Steel pipe used in pipeline construction

Generally, when you make a transportation option for a pipeline project several key phases have to be passed through in the examination of the potential value, and associated risks, on the transportation overall cycle life. Material selection and operational pressure are two important considerations. Furthermore, the main concern is the capacity that the steel pipes used for pipelines has to avoid the propagation of any failure due to an external interference and therefore, limit the consequences of the massive gas emission on persons, property and environments.

Today, various types steel pipes have been widely used for pipeline projects, for in the ideal conditions, the good properties of cold rolled steel pipe do not degrade with the passage of time. However, it can not be denied that steel pipe is subject to corrosion in service and may suffer degradation from defects created during manufacturing or construction, or from the effects of careless excavations. It is also possible to prevent spills related to these factors by inspecting and testing pipe as it is being made and installed, by protecting it from corrosion, by protecting it from excavation damage and by performing periodic in service inspections or tests to locate damaged areas and repair them. Furthermore, in practical applications, almost all of the steel tube users will encounter such a problem. That is to say, the pipes will inevitably be subject to varying degrees of damages over time.

Hot dipped galvanized steel pipe can be regarded as the most favored pipe by people because of its cost effective, maintenance-free corrosion protection system that will be able to last for decades even in the harshest environments. As a matter of fact, for more than 100 years, hot dipped galvanized steel pipe has been utilized extensively to combat corrosion in major industrial environments including petro-chemical, transportation, and public utilities.

In addition, pre galvanized steel pipe is another important steel pipe widely used for pipeline construction in recent years. Technically, pre-galvanization is also known as mill galvanized, due to the fact that the steel sheet is rolled through molten zinc. After the sheet is sent through the mill to be galvanized it is cut to size and recoiled. A specific thickness is applied to the entire sheet, for example pre-galvanized Z275 steel has a 275g per square meter zinc coating. One of the advantages which pre-galvanized steel has over hot dip galvanized steel is that it has a better appearance.
